NIF

Hi,

I already have my citizen card and passport and was looking to opening a bank account in Portugal. My citizen card does not display the nif number and I have read on eportugal website that nif is issued automatically for Portuguese citizens. Do you know how I can obtain my nif number? I do not stay in Portugal and agents and tax representatives are charging alot for applying for the nif, whereas I read that obtaining nif while in Portugal is free. Please advise

If you obtained your "Cartão Cidadão" through a Portuguese consulate, most likely no NIF has been assigned to you.

You can check it by calling the Tax Authority: 217 206 707

Here's the thing: if you are a portuguese citizen, but you were "born" abroad and have never been a resident in Portugal, then as I said, you probably don't have a NIF.

But you do not need a professional tax representative. Any portuguese citizen in Portugal can be a representative. If you have relatives or friends i portugal, they can represent you. Perhaps in exchange for a bottle of wine? :-)
